SEND
BackFitzmaurice is the designated accessible school in the Bradford on Avon area for children with physical disabilities and our school building is designed to be fully accessible.
Like every school, Fitzmaurice has children who need some additional help to ensure that they can make the same progress as their peers. These children are considered to have ‘special educational needs’. In ensuring that we provide appropriately for these children we follow the Special Needs Code of Practice and we use the Wiltshire Graduated Response to SEND Support (GRSS) to help us plan for the children’s progression.
Children have different levels of need and if identified as needing additional help their needs will be met through either: School Support, a My Support Plan or they will have been through statutory assessment and be in receipt of an Education Health Care Plan (EHCP).
The children’s needs are catered for in differing ways. For those at School Support a provision map details how they may be supported in the classroom by the teacher or a teaching assistant for the bits they need additional help for or they may undertake a specific intervention programme designed to help them make progress in the area they are finding difficult. If the level of need is more complicated a My Support Plan may be created to detail the provision that will be required.
A Special Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo, a qualified teacher with a specialism in special educational needs) oversees the provision for all the children with additional needs and if a My Support Plan is deemed necessary this is created by the SENCo alongside the class teacher, parent/carer and child. The SENCo works with the teachers to decide which intervention programmes are best for each child and arranges specialist support from the Educational Psychologist, Local Authority Special Needs teacher/Behaviour Support teacher, School Nurse and Speech and Language therapist.
Our SEND Policy can be found on the Palladian website HERE.
