Term 5:
In our class this term, we will be diving into a range of exciting topics across the curriculum. In history, we're exploring the fascinating story behind banknotes, looking at how they've evolved over time and the unique features that keep them secure today. Our science lessons are all about the human body, specifically looking at the circulatory system. Over in art, creativity is taking shape, as we study sculptures and experiment with 3D designs using different materials. For our English and reading lessons, we will be using the class book: Kay’s Anatomy, by Adam Kay, which brings human biology to life with humour and fun facts that make learning about our bodies both entertaining and educational.
Term 4:
This term has flown by, and Year 5/6 have made incredible progress! They’ve written some beautiful narratives and informative texts, showcasing their creativity and knowledge. In science, the children continued their research on Charles Darwin, deepening their understanding of natural selection and animal adaption. To enhance this learning, we visited Bristol Aquarium, where they explored fascinating animals, learning about their habitats and adaptions. We also delved into the importance of oceans, learning about the challenges they face and how we can contribute to their preservation. In design technology, the children have been busy designing and sewing their own stuffed toys, using a blanket stitch, developing both their craftsmanship and creativity. It’s been a term full of learning and hands-on experiences!
Term 3:
Term 3 is going to be another fantastic term. In History, the children will be researching the question ‘What did the Greeks ever do for us?’. The children were dive into the Greek world, learning about Greek beliefs, how ancient Greece was governed and how Greek philosophers influence us today. In Science, we will be following Darwin’s footsteps; learning about natural selection, adaptation, inheritance and evolution. In Art, we will be looking at architecture and observational drawings. Linking to Art, Design and Technology will be creating structures and bridges. For English, the children will be reading the non-fiction text, ‘Survivors’ and creating a journalistic piece of writing. In Maths, the children will be continuing with multiplication and division, fractions, decimals, area/perimeter/volume and percentages.
Term 2:
This is going to be another fantastic term. In Science, we will continue to be exploring the different types of forces and using our knowledge to conduct more experiments. The children will be looking at levers, pulleys and gears; creating a wind powered pulley system to lift a paper cup. Our English lessons feature the wonderful story ‘The Explorers’ by Katherine Rundell. Our genre of writing will be a journey narrative. For Art, children are using mixed media to create self-portraits. In Geography this term, we are exploring the question ‘Why does population change?’. DT is exciting this term! The children are going to be designing and creating their own pop-up books, aimed at year 1 children!
Term 1:
Welcome back to all the children in Owl class. This is the first term of a fantastic and busy year! The children will be learning all about Vikings, during our history lessons, focusing on the topic question ‘Were the Vikings raiders, traders or something else?’ Over the next 2 terms, our science focus will be ‘forces and magnets’.
During the third week, the year 6’s will be away on their residential for a week and the year 5’s will take part in a project.
Our book this term will be ‘The Viking Boy’, linking to our history topic. The final write will be an informal letter. We will focus on the grammar features of brackets, colons and semi-colons.
Our maths this term will be around the place value of numbers up to 10,000,000.
Towards the end of term 1, we are looking forward to attending the Bath Literacy Festival, to see the author Katherine Rundell!
