As our 'WOW' introduction to our new book this term 'Survivors', some of us were brave enough to try eating some insects, including crickets, locusts and mealworms. Do you think you would eat bugs if your survival depended on it?!

Term 3:

This term in Year 5 and 6, we have really enjoyed becoming familiar with some of the stories in our book ‘Survivors’ (some of them were quite gruesome!). We have been busy learning and refining our journalistic writing skills, to report on some of the incredible tales of survival. In science, we have been learning about how and why different species evolve over time and have explored some of the specific adaptations which help them to survive in their environments. We particularly enjoyed learning about hybrid animals and were surprised to learn that some of our own pets could be considered as ‘hybrid’ breeds. In art, we became architects, sketching and designing our own buildings and taking inspiration from other famous architects. In History, we have been learning about Greek myths; Greek beliefs and how the different city states were governed, including the rights of their citizens. We have been studying the structures of various different types of bridges in DT – ask us which type of bridge is the strongest! We enjoyed building bridges from different materials, including spaghetti, paper and wood – learning how to saw safely and accurately was definitely our highlight.

Term 2:

This is going to be another fantastic term. In Science, we will continue to be exploring the different types of forces and using our knowledge to conduct more experiments. The children will be looking at levers, pulleys and gears; creating a wind powered pulley system to lift a paper cup. Our English lessons feature the wonderful story ‘The Explorers’ by Katherine Rundell. Our genre of writing will be a journey narrative. For Art, children are using mixed media to create self-portraits. In Geography this term, we are exploring the question ‘Why does population change?’. DT is exciting this term! The children are going to be designing and creating their own pop-up books, aimed at year 1 children!

Please take a look at some of our 'Portraits' art work in our gallery below.

Term 1:

Welcome back to all the children in Merlin class. This is the first term of a fantastic and busy year! The children will be learning all about Vikings, during our history lessons, focusing on the topic question ‘Were the Vikings raiders, traders or something else?’ Over the next 2 terms, our science focus will be ‘forces and magnets’.

During the third week, the year 6’s will be away on their residential for a week and the year 5’s will take part in a project.

Our book this term will be ‘The Viking Boy’, linking to our history topic. The final write will be an informal letter. We will focus on the grammar features of brackets, colons and semi-colons.

Our maths this term will be around the place value of numbers up to 10,000,000.

Towards the end of term 1, we are looking forward to attending the Bath Literacy Festival, to see the author Katherine Rundell!
